Introducing Psychological Safety for Supervisors
Course Description: Employees who are scared of pointing out problems or stressed about being safe at work can’t achieve their full potential. Everyone wins in a work culture that supports openness and sharing perspectives. Psychological safety is a practical approach that helps us build employee trust and confidence. Take this course to learn what it is, what its benefits are, how to create it, and how to monitor or measure it. This course is ideal for supervisors, managers and other people who support safety efforts.
Notes from the Subject Matter Expert:
According to the Harvard professor who coined the term in 1999, psychological safety is the belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes, and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking.
In workplaces with a good psychological safety climate, employees are encouraged to take risks, experiment and learn from their mistakes, leading to increased creativity and adaptability. This newfound sense of psychological safety empowers individuals to stop work if unsure, seek help when needed, challenge the status quo, explore new ideas and drive positive change within an organization.
By the end of this global focus course, supervisors and other learners will be able define psychological safety; recognize its performance, safety and other benefits; identify how top-level leaders, supervisors and employees can help create a psychologically safe work environment; and recall how to monitor and measure the psychological safety of the workplace.
